My current research focus is on the ecology and management of coastal marshes and seagrass beds in the Gulf of Mexico and how wintering waterfowl and other birds use them. Current projects deal with effect of nutrients on submersed aquatic vegetation in St. Johns River, Florida; effect of bottom elevation and hydrology on emergent marsh vegetation communities in Catahoula Lake, Louisiana; wintering waterfowl use of vegetation communities on Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana; effect of Hurricane Mitch on seagrass beds and live bottoms on the Carribean coast of Honduras and Guatemala; effects of waterfowl herbivory on submersed aquatic vegetation in Marsh Island, Louisiana; effects of airboat traffic associated with seismic exploration on emergent marsh at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana. Studies have recently been completed on effects of impoundment management on waterfowl and waterbird use of coastal marshes in southeast Louisiana, and on foraging ecology and contaminants of diving ducks wintering in the seagrass beds of the northern and western coasts of the Gulf of Mexico.
