Kirsten Heimann

Senior Lecturer, School of Tropical Biology, James Cook University

My current and previous research focuses on ecophysiology and cell biology of marine microalgae.

My major areas of research comprise the following categories: marine bioluminescence (especially marine dinoflagellates) and their use in effluent toxicity tests. Nutrient physiology with a focus on nutrient utilization of micro- and macroalgae including phytoremediation; the role of biotic and abiotic factors in harmful algal bloom formation and levels of toxicity; biofouling and its relationship with the regulation of Golgi trafficking of adhesive proteins in marine diatoms; host / symbiont interactions focusing on the physiology of zooxanthellae.
