The Biology Department consists of about 30 faculty members, more than 75 graduate students and 7 full-time support staff members and is actively engaged in many facets of biological research. In 1990, the Biology Department was recognized as the best in the State of Louisiana by an independent panel of distinguished biologists. |
| The Department is housed in
two buildings, Billeaud Hall and Wharton Hall.
Facilities include the Microscopy Center, well equipped research laboratories, a nucleic acid analysis facility, aquatic laboratories, Herbarium, zoological collections, and a shop maintained by a full-time technician. The new 50-acre Center for Ecology and Environmental Technology (CEET) located about 6 miles from the main campus provides additional research opportunities. The LUMCON Marine Laboratory in Cocodrie, Louisiana provides vehicles and small boats for field research and large marine research vessels.The National Wetland Research Center in the UL Lafayette Research Park provides additional research opportunities. The combined resources of the typically grant funded Research Faculty and Adjunct Faculty offer many opportunities for both Undergraduate and Graduate Students.
