I am interested in studying the structure, developmental regulation, and evolution of tissue specific plant genes. In my laboratory, we use the seed storage protein genes of cotton as a model system.

The seed storage proteins of cotton are products of three multigene families. Representatives of these multigene families have been characterized by DNA sequence analysis of cDNA and genomic DNA clones. The relationships among some members of these multigene families have been determined by computer analysis of DNA sequences.

One of the current studies in my laboratory involves characterization of the promoter regions of the cottonseed storage protein genes. This work involves analysis of the effects of genetically engineered deletion and site directed mutations on promoter strength and patterns of tissue specific and developmental stage specific expression in transgenic plants. Other research topics currently under investigation in my laboratory include: analysis of evolutionary homology among members of plant seed storage protein gene sets, studies of the evolutionary relatedness of regulatory and structural elements of plant multigene families, expression of plant genes in procaryotic expression vectors, and host plant effects on expression of cloned genes in transgenic plants.
