Plants are the most critical sources of food and fiber fulfilling our needs. Plant genetic research has advanced extremely rapidly in the past two decades thanks to newly developed high-throughput tools such as next generation sequencing and technology-aided phenotyping. These have greatly aided mapping and identifying economically important genes in crop plants. In my lab, we seek to identify such genes in sorghum using association mapping with single nucleotide polymorphic markers developed in the sorghum minicore collection (Morris et al. 2013, PNAS 110 453-458), in collaboration with Dr. Hari Upadhyaya at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Upadhyaya et al. 2009, Crop Sci 49:1769–1780). Candidate genes have been identified and are being tested in sorghum for their impact on biomass and sugar yield using genetic transformation. We are also in the process of creating unique genotypes of economic value in other crop plants using transgenic, traditional methods or combination of both. The ultimate goal is not only to identify genes affecting economically important traits in crop plants but also to create crop plants of high economic values.
